The Cycling Club “Vänta Aga” was founded in 1979, when a group of four alumni of the University of Tartu decided to set out on a bike trip to discover more distant lands. The destination of choice was Transcaucasia and the cyclists were Andres Kiviste, Lembit Pallas, Evald Veldemann and the group leader Rein Lepik. Since the trip was not intended to be a one-time endeavour we asked a friend, Andres Ader, to devise a name and a logo for the club. Such was the birth of the cycling club “Vänta Aga”. It should be noted however, two years before this first trip there was a pioneering expedition to the Carpathians taken by Urmas Anderson, Rein Kilk and Rein Lepik.
Subsequently, cycling trips have continued each year, with the exception of a few summers sacrificed for preparation of larger events. All the continents have been visited except for the Antarctic.
The members of the Club are friends who have participated in our trips outside Estonia and who still enjoy riding a bike. The total membership is over 40, plus an impressive list of our honorary members, who have contributed much towards the success of our trips.
In more recent times the Club has taken part in many biking skills competitions, contributed to the organisation of urban bicycle traffic, been the initiator and implementer of a network of cycling routes in Estonia, participated in the activities of the European Cyclists’ Federation and been involved in the team of initiators of the EuroVelo project.
Rein Lepik has prepared a number of musical slide series and video films about the trips, which have won awards at nationwide competitions in the former Soviet Union, the Baltic countries and Estonia. Many travel films have reached a wider audience over TV channels.
