Sign standards, installation, signposts

To work out sign standards, the Cycling Club “Vänta Aga” conducted a poll on different samples to determine the preferences. Proceeding from the results of the poll, the standards of Denmark and England were taken as a basis in a slightly modified form, which gave rise, in cooperation with the Road Administration, to the currently effective cycling route signposting standard. The Club has also translated the Danish Light-Traffic Sign Installation Instructions for use as guidelines.

As far as is known to us, the standard effective in Estonia has also been adopted, after long-drawn domestic debates, by Latvia and Lithuania.

The signs standing on Estonian cycling routes have mostly been installed by the Cycling Club “Vänta Aga” while on Route No. 1 the setting up of signs was organised by the Road Administration. The cities of Tallinn, Pärnu and Kuressaare have also been involved in the installation of signs within their precincts. By the end of 2004 twenty-four routes with a total length of 3,700 km have been signposted with a total of 3,080 signs.

The maintenance and repair of cycling signposts has proved to be a very important and extensive endeavour. Each year about 1,000 signposts have had to be serviced or repaired. As a result, the signposted biking routes have normally been good to use. The maintenance of the signposts has been undertaken by the Cycling Club “Vänta Aga”, with the funding coming from the CEI foundation.
